I have to warn you though, that the next 'best' in the series (quality, tension, content-wise) is Extras, way at the end. I wondered about Tally and Shay, too. Their dynamic is much stronger than the one between Tally and David. He's a bit of a Mary Sue, really, or whatever it is they call male characters in this case. I actua...Extremely thought-provoking review there!

I actually love Uglies in itself, although I'm not majorly bothered about the other books in the sequence. I really didn't think about whether there was a problem with the stakes / consequences when I read this book. I think that's because I engaged more with the Tally / Shay / David relationships than any other aspect. I did invest in Tally and Shay's friendship especially (possibly because I initially thought *they* were going to get together), and I feel there were consequences for Tally there.

Having read your review though, I do feel that Uglies could have been much more powerful as a standalone novel, with an ending that didn't have to set up the sequel. Tally lobotomised and no longer caring about it, or seeing the same done to everyone she cares about because of her, and being unable to stop it and left alone... either of those would have carried more weight.Laurenhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06483030255023873716noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-109955980329789216.post-8662216856093380252009-08-27T21:49:54.665+10:002009-08-27T21:49:54.665+10:00I know what you mean, but despite those flaws, I a...I know what you mean, but despite those flaws, I adored Uglies.
