Books about the "real" world + junk food

As you MAY have noticed, I tend to read speculative fiction titles. Like, all the time. But occasionally I feel the need to come out of my warm, safe, paranormal bubble and take a look around at the "real" world. (But as you all of course know there are plenty of truths about the real world in speculative fiction, they're just dressed up with aliens or robots or fairies, blah blah blah. You know the drill.)

The following are books in my pile that are not fantasy or paranormal or dystopian, but that I'm truly excited about:

Wintergirls by Laurie Halse Anderson

Thirteen Reasons Why by Jay Asher

The Sky Always Hears Me, But the Hills Don't Mind by Kirsten Cronn-Mills

And you know what all these books have in common? ANGST. Great big bucket loads of lovely lovely angst. Maybe I'm an angst fiend as well as a fiend fiend, hehe.

Please commiserate with me: I'm on a health kick right now (salad, tuna, non-fat unflavoured yogurt, green tea ... yawn) so I'm getting my "junk" from books. I'm sneaking chapters of L. J. Smith's The Strange Power in between chapters of The Ask and the Answer. Shh don't tell! It feels like a real guilty pleasure.

But be warned: In my opinion L.J. Smith CAN DO NO WRONG. She's kinda like the way my gay friends think of Madonna: A GODDESS. Expect an utterly unbiased and reasoned review shortly.
