In My Mailbox (9)

This meme is hosted by The Story Siren.

For Review:

Liar, Justine Larbalestier (yay!)
A Touch of Dead, Charlaine Harris
The Monstrumologist, Rick Yancey (double yay! I've read about a quarter of it so far and it's really good.)
Evil Cats, Elia Anie
Surf Ache, Gerry Bobsien

Bought:

The Secret of Dragonhome, John Peel (Bookmooch. A few months ago I posted about a book that I'd read as a teenager, but couldn't remember what it was called. Cywrain helped me track it down, and thanks again! If you ever have trouble remembering the title and author of a book and only have a scrap of a scene and a genre to go on, visit Name that Book or What was that Book?)
Return to Labyrinth Volume 2 and Return to Labyrinth Volume 3 by Jake T. Forbes (Book Depository. Have I told you how much I love Book Depository? Free post worldwide, and the books arrive in Australia from the UK in a week. Undamaged. Which is more than I can say for some other online bookshops. And again, YAY LABYRINTH!)
Blood and Chocolate, Annette Curtis Klause (Amazon. That's it there, the spine leaning agains Liar. I found a hardback first edition of this book, which is my favourite YA book from when I was a teenager and paid through the nose for the shipping out to Oz, and it arrived without the damned dust jacket! Muchly disappointed, and I swear that it wasn't mentioned in the condition report. I emailed the store I bought it from and they very nicely offered to send a replacement, which is lovely of them.)

Won:
Things are Gonna Get Ugly, Hilary Homzie. (From Presenting Lenore. Thanks Lenore, it look so cute!)

Library:

Creative Journal Writing, Stephanie Dowrick
The Artist's Way, Julia Cameron
The Lost Book of Salem, Katherine Howe (This is called The Physick Book of Deliverance Dane in the US, which is a far cooler title in my opinion.)

If you're in Australia I hope, like me, your boss gave you Monday off as well and you have a super long weekend! It's Melbourne Cup Day tomorrow (Tuesday), and everyone in Melbourne gets the day off to converge on Flemington in suits and cute dresses and hats and have a flutter on the fillies. It's basically an excuse to get drunk in the sunshine and carry your heels home in your hand. I'm not a races sort of girl ("bogan spew-fest" is how one of my friends describes the races) but I do love the festive atmosphere. It was Derby day on Saturday and my partner and I (as we live in dearest Flemmo) sat on Racecourse Road at our favourite cafe, as we always do on a Saturday, and watched all the cabs and cars go by filled with race-goers. There were not a few limos, and even, horror of horrors, a Barbie pink stretch hummer. Bogan spew-fest indeed.

The two faces of Derby Day

  7. Yay, glad to hear you're enjoying The Monstrumologist. My copy had the UK cover, and I kept thinking it would be...well, more juvenile as the cover suggested. But it was awesomely dark and gritty (more like the impression the US cover gives).

And that's hilarious about the "Bogan spew-fest"! It sounds like the kind of fun that sounds cool, but once you get there you're just tired and dirty and unpleasantly drunk and just want to go home. Not unlike how it feels going to Hollywood Park here (our racetrack...hmm, do I sense a trend?!)

  8. Nice book! I gave a shout out to you in my IMM for introducing me to Return to Labyrinth - I bought all 3!
Also interested in seeing how you like Deliverance Dane...me? not so much :)

  9. I wish I had a super long weekend, but it isn't to be! So I am at work on Monday and then off on Tuesday!

I am not a races kind of girl, but I did go to the Caulfield Guineas a few weeks ago and had a great time. I can't see it become a regular outing, but maybe once every few years.

My sister used to live just near Flemington and there was always a great atmosphere on the big race days.

  12. Looks like you've got some great books there!

You have volume three of Return to Labyrinth! I am jealous! It's setting in my wishlist on Book Depository, waiting for me to get around to transfer some funds into my online shopping account so I can place my order.

I am not into the races either. I'm with you on steering clear of the bogans. A Barbie pink stretch hummer? XD

  13. Happy Melbourne Cup Day! (although I really have no idea what this is).
I can't believe how many books you got this week - when will you ever have time to read them?!?
Yay for Return to Labyrinth 2 and 3!

  14. Thea--the UK cover is a TOTAL disservice to the book.

Shannon--I certainly don't mind at all!
